Elon Musk has voiced strong criticism of President Donald Trump’s flagship tax and spending bill, warning that it threatens to undo years of government cost-cutting efforts. The Tesla CEO, who previously led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), said he was “disappointed” by the legislation, which passed the House by a narrow margin and is now headed to the Senate.
Musk’s main concern is the bill’s impact on the federal deficit. He argued that the sweeping tax cuts and increased spending on defense and immigration enforcement would “increase the budget deficit, not just decrease it, and undermine the work that the DOGE team is doing”. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill could add trillions to the national debt over the next decade.
The public split comes despite Musk’s past support for Trump, including major campaign donations. Musk’s remarks highlight growing tensions within the Republican Party over fiscal priorities, as some conservatives warn the bill’s spending could be “politically suicidal”.
