While visiting Tokyo, US President Donald Trump expressed high hopes for his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, scheduled for this Thursday.
“I will be meeting with President Xi the day after tomorrow,” Trump said, confirming the talks in South Korea. “That’s a big meeting, and I think it’s going to work out very well.”
The meeting, set on the sidelines of the APEC summit, is overshadowed by a new trade flare-up. The US has threatened 100% tariffs in response to China’s rare earth export controls.
This escalation, which also includes US port fees and Chinese countermeasures, has ended a recent period of calm.
Trump, however, called the upcoming discussion “fantastic” and “great for everybody.”
The president noted that both sides are ready for a serious discussion. “I have a lot to talk about with President Xi,” he said, adding, “the Chinese leader also has a lot to talk about with us.”
