Meta’s introduction of an AI-driven image generation tool on Instagram has ignited privacy debates, as it automatically allows users to create AI images using photos from public Instagram accounts. The feature, known as Muse Image, lets users incorporate images from public profiles in their prompts to create personalized AI-generated visuals. Privacy specialists express concerns that many individuals might be unaware of this functionality, as it is set to be active by default upon its release.
The company has emphasized that Muse Image is equipped with safety protocols, ensuring that private accounts and users under 18 are excluded from this feature. Additionally, adult users with public accounts can choose to opt out by adjusting their settings in the “Sharing and Reuse” section. Despite these measures, privacy advocates criticize the complexity of the opt-out process and argue that users should have been required to opt in before their images became available for AI use.
Concerns extend to scenarios where images posted by adults might include minors, potentially exposing children’s images to AI generation despite existing restrictions for underage accounts. Privacy experts stress the importance of comprehensive safeguards to prevent unintentional exposure of children’s likenesses in AI-generated content.
Meta has responded by stating that Muse Image includes mechanisms to prevent misuse and allows users to report any inappropriate AI creations. Currently, this feature is accessible through the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories in the United States, and WhatsApp in selected countries, with plans for broader availability in the future. The ongoing privacy debate underscores the need for clear user consent processes and robust privacy protections as AI technologies become more integrated into social media platforms.
