Trump Intervenes Again as Thailand–Cambodia Ceasefire Weakens

by admin477351

US President Donald Trump has once more intervened in the Thailand–Cambodia border conflict following fresh violence that undermined a recent peace agreement. The White House announced Friday that Trump spoke with leaders from both countries.
The ceasefire he co-signed in October was designed to halt ongoing clashes, but Thailand suspended its involvement after a landmine explosion injured its troops. The fragile agreement quickly came under pressure.
Both sides accused each other of violating the truce after new exchanges of fire erupted midweek. Cambodia additionally reported one civilian fatality, prompting concerns of a wider breakdown.
Malaysia — serving as the chief mediator — was also engaged by Trump. Kuala Lumpur played a central role in the earlier negotiations and continues to guide peace efforts.
The roots of the border dispute lie in century-old territorial disagreements. This year’s five-day flare-up was particularly deadly, killing 43 people and forcing nearly 300,000 residents to flee their homes.
