This type of stress is generally perceived as beneficial when it occurs in manageable amounts and is short-lived.

Certified happiness coach Farheen Belgaumwala explains that healthy stress is typically experienced before significant events such as job interviews, public speaking engagements, exams, or while acquiring new skills. Even though it might trigger temporary physical symptoms like a fast heartbeat or sweaty palms, this kind of stress fosters focus, aids in problem-solving, and can boost confidence once the challenge is surpassed.

The issue arises when stress becomes a constant presence with little room for recuperation. Factors such as heavy workloads, uncertainty, unrealistic expectations, ineffective communication, or lack of emotional support can lead to prolonged pressure, gradually impacting mental and physical health. Without adequate recovery, chronic stress can diminish productivity, harm emotional well-being, and elevate the risk of burnout.

Experts emphasize the importance of recognizing early signs that the body might exhibit before individuals realize they are experiencing excessive stress. Symptoms like persistent fatigue, difficulty sleeping, frequent headaches, irritability, difficulty concentrating, emotional exhaustion, and a constant sense of tension may indicate that stress levels have turned unhealthy.

Achieving a healthy balance doesn’t necessarily require drastic changes. Simple measures such as taking short breaks during the day, enjoying time in nature, practicing deep breathing exercises, setting realistic boundaries, ensuring adequate sleep, and connecting with trusted friends, family, or mental health professionals can effectively manage stress. Understanding the distinction between beneficial and harmful stress enables individuals to maintain productivity while safeguarding their long-term well-being.
