As high-level discussions aimed at advancing diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine took place, Norway restricted its airspace over Oslo and the Romerike region on Tuesday. The move coincided with the arrival of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for talks with key international figures.
During his visit, President Zelensky was scheduled to engage with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. Also expected to participate were U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who was set to join remotely. The talks were slated to continue through Wednesday, focusing on establishing a more constructive diplomatic path to resolve the ongoing conflict.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, Norway and Finland have supported Ukraine through financial aid, military cooperation, and broader European security initiatives. Prime Minister Støre emphasized the importance of these discussions in maintaining Ukraine’s interests at the forefront of international efforts to end the war.
The backdrop of the talks includes continued Russian assaults on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, prompting Ukraine to call for stronger Western air defense support and sustained international pressure on Moscow. The importance of these measures was underscored during Zelensky’s discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which aimed to secure ongoing U.S. support for Ukraine, including warnings about potential Russian threats.
Norway’s political leaders have highlighted the significance of using the Oslo meeting to influence diplomatic efforts positively. Ensuring Ukraine’s interests remain central to the dialogue is seen as crucial in the broader strategy to bring an end to the conflict.
