The recent decision by US President Donald Trump to enforce a 12.5% tariff on a majority of Norwegian imports has drawn sharp criticism from Norway, labeling the action as both unfair and without justification. The tariffs, which have been implemented with immediate effect, predominantly target Norwegian exports including seafood, furniture, and industrial goods.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has dismissed the allegations from the United States that Norway has not sufficiently prevented imports associated with forced labor. Eide emphasized that Norwegian legislation strictly bans products made through forced or child labor. The Norwegian government has officially voiced its disapproval to US authorities regarding the imposed tariffs.
The Norwegian administration has also raised concerns about the disparity in tariff rates, noting that Norway faces a higher tariff than both the European Union and the United Kingdom, which are subjected to a 10% tariff. Despite these grievances, Norway has opted not to implement retaliatory tariffs. Officials argue that such measures would only serve to increase expenses for Norwegian consumers.
Though the United States accounts for only a small portion of Norway’s export market, the new tariffs are expected to have a detrimental impact, particularly on seafood exports. Experts and government officials have warned that these measures could pose a threat to the principles of free trade.
