Europe has experienced a harrowing summer of heatwaves, leading to at least 35,000 excess deaths, a figure that’s expected to rise as more countries finalize their data. Germany, France, and Spain are among the hardest hit, collectively accounting for over 25,000 of these deaths. In Germany, approximately 14,000 heat-related fatalities were recorded from April to early August, making it the deadliest summer for heat since records began. Spain, facing similar challenges, has seen nearly 5,000 deaths attributed to the heat since May, also setting a grim record.
France has reported around 7,300 excess deaths between late May and July, although this preliminary figure excludes August data. Meanwhile, other European nations, including the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland, have also documented significant mortality increases during extreme heat periods. Throughout these heatwaves, temperatures soared above 40°C in many parts of western and central Europe, shattering numerous national and local temperature records.
Scientists attribute the rising frequency and intensity of these extreme heat events to climate change. The effects of such heatwaves are complex, as heat-related deaths can be challenging to pinpoint. Extreme temperatures often exacerbate pre-existing health conditions like cardiovascular and respiratory issues, which might not be directly recorded as heat-induced fatalities.
Experts anticipate that the final European death toll will be higher as more delayed mortality data is analyzed and August’s numbers are included. This alarming number of deaths underscores the escalating public health risks associated with more intense and frequent heatwaves.
